Nursing in Australia
Taylor Hampton has helped many nurses to a new life in Australia. It is
a popular migratory destination for nurses who claim it is a more enjoyable
working environment and generally a great place to live. Nurses are currently
in high demand in Australia with opportunities for permanent and temporary
work available.
If you are a nurse in the UK and you are interested in working in Australia you
will most likely apply for a visa under the General Skilled Migration category.
Your qualifications will be assessed before applying to the Department of Immigration
and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA) for migration. This assessment is undertaken
by the Australian Nursing Council
Incorporated (ANCI). If a nurse is eligible to apply for registration in
Australia, this will count towards points that can be gained for immigration
purposes. Nurses applying for a working holiday visa do not need to be assessed
by ANCI.
The working holiday maker visa for Australia is available for one or two years,
is electronic, and visa holders can work for any one employer for six months
or study for four months.
Australia has two levels of nursing which are registered and enrolled nurses. Registered nurses are educated in degree level courses at universities. Enrolled nurses gain their accreditation through advanced certificate or diploma level courses in colleges.
Each of the six states and two territories of Australia has its own nurse regulatory authority which has its own register of qualified nurses. You must be registered or enrolled in the area you intend to work.
Mutual recognition laws in Australia allow nurses to register in another state under mutual recognition.
Nursing in Australia is an attractive proposition. Though there are hurdles such as working with new medical terminology and medical procedures, the nurses we have assisted at Taylor Hampton generally say that any anxieties are outweighed by the excitement and adventure of working in a great country.
