Australia opens its borders on February 21st after almost two years since the government closed its borders to the world.

Australia opens borders to visitors

In March 2020, Australia shut its borders to everyone except Australian citizens. Since November 2021, Australia has been progressively opening its borders, but it is only as of yesterday that the government announced the opening of borders will now extend to all international visitors and all remaining visa holders.

What are the entry requirements for Australia?

Along with a valid visa for your visit, all visitors must be double vaccinated.

Scott Morrison stressed in his speech yesterday that no-vaccine-no-entry is “the rule. Everyone is expected to abide by it.” With reference to Djokocvic, Morrison made clear that even with a correct visa, visitors will not be permitted entry if they have not received a valid and up-to-date vaccine, or received the correct exemption to travel

Unvaccinated travelers may still enter under the travel exemption rule. However, they will need to apply for an exemption in the proper way and follow through with the hotel quarantine procedure.

How does the opening of borders affect travel to Australia?

Visitors may expect greater accessibility to Australia and more frequently scheduled flights. The opening of borders is widely celebrated as it has been a hard-hitting two years for those working in the tourism industry. Australia is set out to entice more visitors through new arrangements. We may expect to see more flights listed to Australia from a wider selection of airports around the globe as Australia emphatically pushes for tourism growth. Alan Joyce, Qantas chief executive, says they will see if they can restart flights ‘from more international destinations sooner or add capacity to those routes we are already flying.’ Such is the push to see tourism grow.

It is a great time to visit Australia as you can expect easier flight arrangements and a warm welcome in the warmer climate.
