Australian Parent Visa Options
Australia offers several Parent Visa pathways, depending on your circumstances and long-term migration goals.
These include:
- Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143)
- Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173)
- Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 864)
- Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 884)
- Parent Visa (Subclass 103)
- Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)
- Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870)

Who Can Apply?
Most Parent Visa applicants must have a child who is:
- an Australian citizen
- an Australian permanent resident
- or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
For many Parent Visa subclasses, applicants must also satisfy the Balance of Family Test, which generally requires that at least half of their children live permanently in Australia, or that more of their children live in Australia than in any other country.
Some Parent Visa subclasses, including the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870), are not subject to the Balance of Family Test.
Applicants must also meet the relevant health, character and sponsorship requirements.
Contributory Parent Visas
Contributory Parent Visas provide a pathway to Australian permanent residence for eligible parents.
These visas generally offer faster processing than non-contributory Parent Visas but require a substantially higher government application charge.
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible to apply directly for permanent residence or choose a temporary pathway before obtaining permanent residence.

Parent Visas (Subclass 103 and 804)
The Parent Visa and Aged Parent Visa provide an alternative permanent migration pathway for eligible parents.
These visas generally involve significantly longer processing times because they are subject to annual planning levels established by the Australian Government.

Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870)
The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa allows eligible parents to spend extended periods with their children in Australia without applying for permanent residence.
Depending on the visa granted, parents may stay in Australia for several years, with opportunities to apply for a further temporary visa if they continue to meet the relevant requirements.
To qualify, applicants must have an approved sponsor who satisfies the sponsorship requirements set by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.
This visa does not provide a pathway to permanent residence but can be an excellent option for families wishing to spend more time together in Australia.
Health and Character Requirements
Most Parent Visa applicants must satisfy Australia's health and character requirements before a visa can be granted.
Depending on the visa subclass, applicants may also need to provide:
- police clearance certificates
- health examinations
- evidence of sponsorship
- Assurance of Support documentation (where applicable)
- financial documents
- identity documents
- additional supporting evidence requested by the Department of Home Affairs.
