Australian Skilled Migration Visa pass mark increase from 1 July 2018
From 1 July 2018 the pass mark in relation to applications for a General Skilled Migration Visa is 65 points.
The Australian Department of Human Affairs explains: “This pass mark reflects the high level of interest in skilled migration to Australia and the high calibre of prospective applicants who express their interest in the General Skilled Migration program. “
The Australian Skilled Migration Programme remains unchanged from previous year in terms of Visa places capped at 190,000 in 2018-2019 financial year.
The new Visa pass mark affects applicants wishing to apply for the following Visas:
- a Skilled—Independent (Permanent) 189 Visa;
- a Skilled—Nominated (Permanent) 190 Visa;
- a Skilled—Regional Sponsored (Provisional) 489 Visa.
Points can be claimed for certain “attributes” including but not limited to age, qualifications, relevant work experience, language abilities.
Prospective applicants must be invited the Minister of Immigration to apply for the relevant Visa within 60 days.

The new legislation preserves the pool and pass mark from the previous instrument for all visa applications for the above visas made before, on or after 1 July 2018 in response to an invitation given by the Minister before 1 July 2018.
