IELTS vs PTE for Australian Visa Applications
Aug 31, 2026
Australia remains one of the world’s most attractive destinations for skilled professionals, students, and families seeking a high quality of life, strong economy, and welcoming communities. For many applicants, proving English language ability is a key step in the visa process. Therefore, in this article Timea Pocze-Graf, our expert, registered Australian Migration Agent, examines some hurdles applicants may need to overcome for a successful visa application.
Two of the most popular tests are IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English). Both are fully accepted by the Australian Department of Home Affairs for skilled migration, student visas, and employer-sponsored pathways. This guide explains the differences, score requirements, and how to choose the right test for your Australian visa application in 2026.
Why Australia?
Australia offers excellent career opportunities, world-class education, and a safe, multicultural environment. Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane consistently rank among the most liveable in the world. The country’s skilled migration program welcomes professionals in demand, from healthcare and engineering to IT and finance. Whether you are applying for a Subclass 189, 190, 491, or a student visa, meeting the English language requirement is essential.
IELTS vs PTE: Key Differences
Both IELTS and PTE assess the same four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. However, the test formats and experiences differ.
- Test Format: IELTS offers a face-to-face speaking interview with a human examiner, while PTE is fully computer-based with AI scoring.
- Results Speed: PTE results are typically available within 48 hours, whereas IELTS results take 1–3 days for computer-based tests and up to 13 days for paper-based tests.
- Test Duration: PTE takes about 2 hours 15 minutes, while IELTS takes around 2 hours 45 minutes.
- Scoring: IELTS uses band scores (0–9), while PTE uses a scale of 10–90.
- Global Recognition: IELTS is recognised by over 12,500 organisations worldwide, compared to over 3,900 for PTE.
English Language Requirements for Australian Visas
The Department of Home Affairs sets English proficiency levels that determine visa eligibility and points for skilled migration. Below we list some of these to explain to applicants. The main levels are:
- Competent English: Minimum requirement for most skilled visas.
- IELTS: 6.0 in each band
- PTE: 50 in each section (or per-skill scores from August 2025: Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51, Speaking 54)
- Proficient English: Awards 10 migration points.
- IELTS: 7.0 in each band
- PTE: 65 in each section (or per-skill: Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 69, Speaking 76)
- Superior English: Awards 20 migration points.
- IELTS: 8.0 in each band
- PTE: 79 in each section (or per-skill: Listening 69, Reading 70, Writing 85, Speaking 88)
Which Test Is Right for You?
Given there is a choice of test, which should you choose? Timea explains that both tests are equally valid for Australian visa applications. Your choice should depend on your strengths and preferences.
- Choose PTE if: You prefer computer-based testing, want faster results, or feel more comfortable with AI scoring.
- Choose IELTS if: You prefer a human examiner for the speaking test, or need broader global recognition for study or work beyond Australia.
Recent changes in August 2025 mean PTE now requires separate minimum scores for each skill, making it important to check your target scores carefully. IELTS thresholds have remained unchanged.
Tips for Success
In order to have a successful test, you will need to ensure that you are equipped with the right knowledge and are fit and ready to begin! Here are 4 rules you should abide by!
- Prepare Thoroughly: Use official practice materials for both tests.
- Know Your Target Scores: Check the latest requirements on the Department of Home Affairs website.
