This update discusses the Skilled Visa routes for migration to Australia.  In the last months of the Morrison Government, Australia’s former Prime Minister announced that the 40hrs a fortnight work limitation on international students will be relaxed for all sectors of the economy to help mitigate the workforce shortages.

From 5 March 2022, two new permanent resident visa streams are available for Hong Kong SAR and British National Overseas (BNO) passport holders. Changes include:

  • Some BNO applicants will be able to apply for permanent residence under the new ‘Hong Kong’ eligibility stream
  • Some BNO students will be eligible for automatic extensions of their Graduate Visa and for pathways to permanent residence.

The Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List

The Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL) identifies 44 occupations that hold critical skills needed to support Australia’s economy.

The other skilled occupations list remains active, but the PMSOL list takes priority. The 44 Occupations (ANZSCO code) are:

  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Visa (Subclass 494)
  • Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (Subclass 186)
  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme Visa (Subclass 187)
  • We are yet to see what the new Albanese Labour Government will do with Immigration but all the indications are that Australia will continue to open up with Western Australia coming online in July.
